Today marks the end of 2024. Reflecting on this milestone and the passing year, I want to share my annual review using my modified “Seven F’s” framework: Family, Friends, Fitness, Finance, Faith, Fun, and Future.
Fitness (3/5) – Trending Negative
After stopping my antidepressants in November, I’ve experienced both wins and challenges. While my emotional regulation is more challenging without medication, my depression remains manageable. The most significant improvement has been the elimination of anxiety – no more fear responses to everyday activities like phone calls.
However, I’m now at my heaviest weight (266 pounds), partly due to losing the appetite-suppressant effects of the antidepression medication. Despite this, I can still do 25 pushups, so there is hope for the future.
Finance (3/5) – Trending Positive
The past nine months since losing full-time employment in March have been relatively austere, though “austere” is relative. We’re managing well – the last two bill cycles haven’t required dipping into savings, and we’re approaching the point where we can start building our savings again.
Faith (4/5) – Trending Positive
2024 marked my journey to agnosticism. I’ve finally reached a place of peace with my beliefs: I believe in something – call it God if you will – but not the God of organized religion. I’ve moved toward a more humanistic perspective, focusing on being good, helping others, and living life fully while I can. This clarity brings relief and contentment.
Friends (4/5) – Trending Positive
Friendships have been rich this year. Daniel, a surprising gift from my JM experience, has become a valued friend and mentee. Kara and Heather, initially my daughter’s friends, have become family. The Pokémon community, especially Tracy and Hunter, has brought genuine friendships into my life. I have more meaningful friendships now than ever before.
Family (5/5)
My core family remains my greatest strength, including my daughters, grandson, wife, and extended family members like Dennis, Kenzie, Alice, and Lee. They’re my chosen inner circle, providing support, accountability, and unconditional love. Despite occasional tensions, we always return to each other.
Fun (3/5) – Neutral
While financial constraints limited traditional sources of fun like travel (just Utah twice and New York in February), we’ve found joy in simpler ways – game nights and quality time with loved ones. There’s room for improvement, but we’ve managed to maintain a baseline of enjoyment.
Future – Looking Ahead to 2025
Moving to Minnesota represents more than a geographical change – it aligns with our values, politics, and desired lifestyle. While leaving Florida friends will be difficult, I’m excited about the four seasons, larger living space, and the notorious “Minnesota Nice” culture.
2024 has been transformative, ranking among my top five most challenging years, but distinctly different because I feel better equipped to handle these challenges. Without antidepressants, I’m rediscovering my drive and optimism. The year brought more than it took, serving as an influential and impactful teacher.
Here’s to 2025 – let’s kick ass.
